“De-constructing gender roles through Image Theatre”

Image Theater is one of the methods included in the Theater of the Oppressed methodology that uses body postures (human statues) to depict oppression or aspects of oppression. In the Theater of the Oppressed the audience becomes active, thus as "spect-actors" they explore, show, analyze and transform the reality in which they are living.

Along with my colleagues from AHEAD Association, in the frame of the training "De-constructing gender roles", I had the opportunity to facilitate an Image Theater workshop. The aim of this activity was to empower the participants to create an Image Theater   performance in the field of gender mainstreaming to impact social change.

During the activity participants were introduced to the method and tools for conflict management and non-violent interaction. The scene presented in the image theater play explored an issue of oppression in the field of gender based violence. The subjects and story lines originated from a real experience of the participants, developed during the workshop and rehearsal. The performance it was an exercise for real life, where participants got an approach of developing tactics to fight the oppression they face in their work.

By the active participation of everyone during the workshop and performance, they were open to new situations and to look upon a problem from different points of view.
