Commemoration of the liberation of the Ravensbrück Concentration Camp

On April 30th 2025,  the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Ravensbrück extermination camp is commemorated. It is estimated that 130.000 prisoners were held, mostly women. Also, there were around 20.000-30.000 fatalities.

Ravensbrück camp, close to Berlin, was exclusively for women, but there were men too (around 20.000).

The deported women suffered sexual and physical violence and were forced to work as slaves in the production of armaments for German companies such as Siemens and Industriehof.

The camp operated from 1939 until the end of the Second World War in 1945. Ravensbrück was liberated by Soviet troops on the same day that Hitler committed suicide in a Berlin bunker.

In commemoration of all those killed, AHEAD works with young people through different activities to prevent hate speech, support inclusive democracy and the recovery of democratic memory.
